Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, along with environment officers, have toured the capital, shutting down illegal dumping sites.

Why is Mosiria shutting down illegal dumping site?
He noted that the county government has identified private service providers illegally dumping waste in undesignated areas, contributing to environmental degradation in Nairobi.

In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, Mosiria said that on Thursday, March 27, they successfully closed down a dumping site on Likoni Road and another in Kiang’ombe.
“We have today closed two dump sites, one in Likoni Road and another in Kiangombe. The operation targeting illegal sites will cover the entire county. We urge garbage collectors to utilize the designated dumping sites to avoid their licenses being revoked,” he said.
According to Mosiria, at the dumpsite along Likoni Road, the four service provider vehicles found at the site were impounded, and their licenses for garbage collection are set to be canceled with immediate effect.

What are the consequences of dumping in illegal sites?
Mosiria confirmed that private garbage collection service providers who dispose of waste at illegal dump sites will face strict penalties.
“Any service provider found dumping waste in unauthorized areas will have their license revoked immediately without their consent. We remain committed to ensuring full compliance, and no unauthorized dumping will be allowed to continue in these areas,” he added.
Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment confirmed that closing the dumping site is part of the county’s ongoing efforts to eliminate all illegal dumping sites across Nairobi.
“Kenya’s Constitution, under Article 42, grants every citizen the right to a clean and healthy environment while also requiring them to protect and improve its quality. Additionally, the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) of 1999 and the Nairobi City County Solid Waste Management Act of 2015 mandate that all waste be disposed of at county-approved designated sites,” he added.
Mosiria emphasized that the waste generator, or the source of the waste, will also be held accountable for hiring service providers involved in illegal dumping rather than the licensed authority.
Were drunkards taken to clean the City mortuary?
In a related story, Mosiria confirmed that drunkards caught urinating in Nairobi’s Central Business District are taken to clean the City Mortuary as punishment.
He said the move has helped keep people in check, as no one wants to be sent to clean a morgue.
Mosiria urged the city’s residents to follow the rules and use designated public toilets, hotels, or bars to relieve themselves, stressing that these facilities are available for use.
