Impeached Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has ditched the ruling UDA Party during the swearing in ceremony of the new Meru Governor.
Mwangaza will launch her new party next week, this is according to the Standard Digital. The move is perceived to be the beginning of fallout with President William Ruto’s UDA Party.
Meru Deputy Governor Isaac Mutuma will take over office of Governor after Monday, March 17 swearing in ceremony.
Mwangaza took office as an independent candidate and was impeached with majority of MCAs allied to UDA Party.
Last month, Mwangaza attended Meru leaders meeting at DP’s Karen residence.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had promised to launch his new party urging Mr Kenya to ditch UDA.
Speaking on Monday, Gachagua claimed that ODM boss Raila Odinga had come up with demands, including more Cabinet Secretary and Principal Secretary positions for Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party members.
“For Raila to support the President, he demanded six cabinet positions just the way we had asked for eight positions in exchange for our votes because that is how a government operates,” Gachagua revealed.
Gachagua also revealed how Ruto used threats and political manoeuvring to silence him before his impeachment in October 2024.
Gachagua, who became Kenya’s second in command in September 2022, detailed a strained working relationship characterized by what he described as intimidation and blackmail from the head of state.
