Macharia explained that Montet had stood by Raila during four election campaigns, even facing challenges like violence during roadshows. Because of her loyalty, he convinced Raila to nominate her as a senator after the 2022 elections.
He recalled how Montet was grateful for his decision, saying, “She wrote to me, saying, ‘SK, you could have asked Raila to nominate you, but instead, you chose our daughter.’”
Betty Montet was nominated as a senator under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. She was the wife of Colonel (Rtd) James Gitahi, a former presidential pilot for Mwai Kibaki and Daniel arap Moi.
Gitahi tragically passed away on March 5, 2025, in a road accident at Kyumvi Junction on Mombasa Highway. His car collided head-on with a lorry and burst into flames, leaving him trapped inside. Witnesses said he was overtaking another truck when he misjudged the distance of an oncoming lorry.
Emergency responders were unable to save him in time. His death was a huge loss to the aviation community and his family.
