Former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has come out strongly to defend the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) amidst recent political allegations. In his remarks, Wamalwa emphasized that the KDF, one of the most respected military institutions globally, should remain free from toxic political debates that seek to undermine its integrity. He pointed out that the KDF’s professionalism has been established through its exemplary service both in Africa and globally, with the only blemish in its history being the 1982 coup attempt.
Responding to claims by Hon. Raila Odinga regarding a planned military coup in June 2024, Wamalwa categorically denied the allegations. According to him, the military’s role during the June protests was not part of any coup plot. Instead, their deployment was a legitimate decision authorized by the National Assembly at the behest of President William Ruto. This deployment was in line with the government’s efforts to maintain order and peace during the unrest, with the KDF being called upon to ensure stability in the face of escalating protests.

Wamalwa further highlighted the KDF’s adherence to human rights, particularly when compared to the National Police Service (NPS), whose handling of the protests came under scrutiny for excessive force. He lauded the military’s restraint and professionalism, noting that the KDF’s presence on the streets was marked by discipline, ensuring that citizens were treated with respect, avoiding the loss of life or unnecessary harm.
The former CS also made a plea for the public to avoid politicizing the role of the KDF. He warned that bringing the military into political battles would tarnish its reputation and undermine its service to the nation. Wamalwa’s defense was a call for unity, urging all Kenyans to support the military as they continue to serve and protect the country, free from political influence.
