Kenyan politician and ODM leader Raila Odinga has once again spoken about the fairness of elections in the country. Speaking during the burial of Col (Rtd) James Gitahi in Machakos on March 15, 2025, Raila claimed that only one election in Kenya’s history was truly free and fair.
According to Raila, the 2002 general election was the only credible one, while all others have had issues. He stated that he has won multiple elections but was never officially declared the winner due to irregularities.
“Uchaguzi ambao ulikuwa free and fair ni wa 2002 peke yake, hizi zingine zote mnajua. Kwa hivyo msiniambie ati nataka kushinda uchaguzi, nimeshashinda mara nyingi. Sijatangazwa tu,” Raila said.
The 2002 election was a historic moment for Kenya. It ended the long rule of KANU and brought Mwai Kibaki to power under the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC). This election was seen as a turning point because it was largely peaceful and accepted by all.
Raila has been a vocal critic of Kenya’s election process for many years. He has run for president several times—in 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022—and has often claimed that the results were manipulated. Some of these elections led to serious political disputes and even violence.
His recent statement shows that he still believes Kenya’s elections are not fair and transparent. It also raises important questions about the country’s democracy and whether future elections will be trusted by all sides.
