During the meeting, leaders from Kisii and Nyamira counties expressed concerns about their perceived marginalization in national appointments. They highlighted the region’s consistent support for the Orange Democratic Movement and sought assurances of equitable consideration in future political appointments. This sentiment has been brewing since August 2024, when local leaders voiced dissatisfaction over the exclusion of Gusii representatives from Cabinet positions allocated to Orange Democratic Movement.
A significant portion of the dialogue focused on the political ambitions of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. Some Gusii leaders are advocating for Matiang’i to vie for the presidency in 2027, urging Raila to support his bid. They argue that Matiang’i’s candidacy could unify the community and enhance their national political influence.
However, Raila emphasized the importance of building broad-based, cross-regional coalitions to secure the presidency. He noted that relying solely on regional support would be insufficient for a successful presidential bid. This perspective underscores the need for any presidential aspirant to garner nationwide backing beyond their ethnic or regional base.
The meeting also addressed the broader issue of the Gusii community’s political future. There is a growing movement among Kisii leaders to establish a regional political party ahead of the 2027 elections. This initiative aims to consolidate the community’s political influence and ensure their interests are adequately represented on the national stage. Such a move could pose challenges for both President William Ruto and Raila Odinga, as it may alter traditional voting patterns and alliances.
