This follows online threats from a group of youth to occupy the Roysambu-based church after President William Ruto donated KSh 20 million and pledged an additional KSh 100 million for the construction of a modern church.

The youth circulated posters on social media, mobilising their peers to attend the event and voicing their disappointment with the president’s decision.

They also questioned whether the president had used taxpayers’ money to contribute to the construction of the church, led by Bishop Edward Mwai.

What was religious leaders message to youth?

Speaking on Thursday, March 6, a group of church leaders in Uasin Gishu county united to condemn the youth planning to occupy the Jesus Winner Ministry.

They urged the youth to repent and humble themselves, advising them to seek dialogue if they had concerns about the country’s governance.

“We pleading with our youth who we gave birth to. We are asking you to go back to the church and humble yourselves. If you see a problem in the country, let us all seat at a table and discuss,” one clergyman said.

They defended the president’s decision to donate to the church, stating that once an offering is given at the altar, it cannot be refunded.

“Since when has an offering ever return. Even if you take your offering to a witch doctor you can never get it back.”

The clergy stated that they saw no issue with the president giving to God any amount he desired, as he is a Christian and the doctrine allows any type of contribution.

Clergy members in Nakuru also weighed in on the debate over Ruto’s church donation, urging the youth to respect both the president and the bishop of Jesus Winner Ministry by refraining from occupying the church.

They further noted that this was not the first time Ruto, or even his predecessor, former president Uhuru Kenyatta, had visited the church in Roysambu.
