NPS Speaks After Police Officers Caught Deleting Footage of NTV Journalists During Majengo Protests

The National Police Service (NPS) has condemned the actions of a police officer who was allegedly seen deleting video footage from an NTV camera crew in Majengo, Nairobi, on Wednesday.

Reports from the Nation indicate that during the incident, police officers stopped a photographer from getting to his camera, which was in their possession.

Another officer reportedly deleted videos that the NTV crew had recorded while covering protests in the area.

The Nation shared this information on social media, noting that this action goes against the Constitution, which protects the freedom of the press.

The journalists were in Majengo to report on protests that started after the shooting of a 17-year-old boy named Ibrahim Ramadhan. This tragic event occurred during a police operation on Tuesday night, sparking anger and demonstrations in the community.

In response to the incident, police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga expressed serious concern. He stated, “As a service, we are gravely concerned and strongly condemn such misconduct.” Nyaga assured the public that the police would conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

He also promised that any officer found guilty of wrongdoing would face strict penalties.

Nyaga emphasized the importance of maintaining a good relationship with the media. He said, “The National Police Service is committed to safeguarding and promoting media freedom, as well as protecting journalists in Kenya, in line with the Constitution and international standards.”
