Migori: At least 36 people have tested positive for cholera following an outbreak of the disease reported in the county last week.

According to Migori county chief officer of public health, Marbel Chanzu, all the new positive tests have since been treated and discharged as they were in stable condition.
However, one patient from Isebania is still hospitalised.
When was cholera outbreak reported in Migori?
Health officials in Migori county declared an outbreak of cholera last week on February 14, after a 20-year-old from Kuria East sub county died over a week ago. At the time, six others were in hospital.

Since then, the county has been putting in place measures to contain the spread of the disease.
But in a latest update, Chanzu told TUKO.co.ke that the outbreak had spread to at least three sub-counties.
The latest confirmed cases were reported in Suna West around Masara goldmines.
“We received a case of nine people who turned positive in Masara and have since been treated and discharged. They are all in stable conditions,” the chief officer said.
“Other cases were in Kuria West and we have since contained the situation. Only one is still admitted at the hospital in Isebania,” she added.
Kenya Red Cross supports Migori’s fight against cholera
As the county moves to contain the cholera outbreak, their efforts received a boost after the Kenya Red Cross Society stepped in with a donation worth over KSh 3 million.
“We have donated assorted medical items like cholera beds, tents, hygiene and promotion items among others” said the Kenya Red Cross Society Western Kenya manager Maurice Anyango.
“We have also dispatched our staffs to help the county during this period,” he added.

Meanwhile, Migori county director of public health Clement Ayungo has called on resident to remain vigilant and continue with measures to avoid further spread of the disease.
“There is no need of panic, just remain vigilant and avoid eating in public places,” Ayungo appealed.
The health officials also called advised locals to ensure they drink treated water.
However, they pointed out that water contamination had been ruled out as the source of outbreak. They suspect it was due to food contamination.
Migori criminal gangs
Meanwhile, TUKO.co.ke recently reported about concerns from Kakrao locals in Migori county over what they claimed was an emergence of criminal gangs.
Locals narrated their encounter with the gang which they said was targeting the defenseless. They noted that at least 30 attacks had been reported in the area within two weeks.
Responding to the locals’ concerns, Migori County Commissioner Kisilu Mutua listed a number of actions they had taken to address the issue, including enhancing police patrols.
