“Ruto’s New Sycophants” Kenyans React as Madaraka Day Venue Shifts from Kitui to Homa Bay

The government had initially planned to hold this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations in Kitui County, but today, the venue was abruptly changed to Homa Bay County. This unexpected shift has sparked widespread debate, with many Kenyans questioning the real reason behind the move.

One major argument is that President William Ruto changed the venue to avoid a hostile reception in Ukambani. This speculation comes from an earlier incident where Ruto, during his visit to North Eastern Kenya, referred to Kamba people as the “ndengu people.” This comment was made while responding to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who had opposed the government’s plan to vaccinate livestock. To dismiss Kalonzo’s criticism, Ruto told Kenyans not to listen to the “ndengu man.” Since green grams (ndengu) are one of the few crops that thrive in Ukambani’s dry climate, many Kamba people felt insulted by the President’s words. Some believe that this comment caused resentment in the region, making Kitui a risky choice for hosting a national event.

Because of this, some argue that Ruto avoided Kitui to escape embarrassment or a cold reception. They claim that had the celebrations taken place in Kitui, the President might have faced an unwelcoming crowd, with locals showing their anger over his past remarks.

However, others believe that the real reason for choosing Homa Bay is political. Since the formation of Ruto’s broad-based government, some ODM leaders, particularly from Luo Nyanza, have become some of his most vocal supporters. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, for example, has been at the forefront in praising Ruto and his government. This has led many to believe that Luo Nyanza, a region that was traditionally anti-Ruto, is slowly aligning itself with the President’s administration.

Critics argue that Ruto is rewarding his **new sycophants** in Luo Nyanza by shifting the celebrations to Homa Bay. They claim that leaders like Wanga, who once opposed Ruto, are now singing his praises in an attempt to secure government favors. This shift in loyalty has led some Kenyans to see Homa Bay as Ruto’s new political stronghold, replacing traditional allies who are now being sidelined.

Whether the venue change was to avoid hostility in Ukambani or to strengthen ties with his new political allies in Luo Nyanza, the decision has raised eyebrows. It has further fueled political speculation that every move Ruto makes is part of a larger strategy to consolidate power and silence opposition.
