A section of FORD party members have called on President William Ruto to come to the defense of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula against his critics who want him removed from office.

Addressing the media on Friday, February 21, 2025, the visibly agitated members decried that the speaker was being unfairly judged and attacked as the president watched yet he was among the key individuals who helped him (Ruto) clinch the presidency.

They noted that Ruto should now return the favour and shush Wetang’ula’s critics to prevent him from losing his position.

Rais hakua na mtu yeyote kutoka Western akachukua ndugu yetu mwenye tunaamini, Wetang’ula speaker akamweka kama nguzo yake na wakafanya agano kwamba yeye akipata atampea uspika, lakini sai anajaribu kusukumwa na rais amenyamaza, tunataka asimame nayeye jinsi Wetang’ula alisimama,” Elvis Otieno, one of the members said.

Bungoma residents protest

The latest comes days after Bungoma residents took to the streets to protest against threats to impeach Wetang’ula.

Accompanied by boda boda operators, the residents called on President Ruto to protect the speaker whom they say has been loyal to the Kenya Kwanza agenda.

“Wetang’ula is our son. He helped deliver the Western Kenya to Ruto in 2022. Those pushing for his impeachment should respect his contribution,” John Wekesa, one of the residents stated.

Despite ending the peaceful protests later in the day, the residents threatened to storm the streets and demonstrate again, should the opposition push for Wetang’ula’s removal from office.

The National Assembly Speaker is facing immense criticism from leaders allied to the opposition over what they term as bias in parliamentary proceedings after his declaration that Kenya Kwanza was the majority in parliament.

The latest to criticise the speaker was Starehe Member of Parliament (MP) Amos Mwago who threatened to file an impeachment motion against Wetang’ula should he refuse to resign. Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) party leader Eugene Wamalwa also criticised the speaker saying the decision to declare the majority belongs to the people.
