Learners across the country have started their mid-term break earlier than expected, disrupting the Ministry of Education’s official 2025 school calendar.
According to the ministry’s schedule, the break was set to run from February 26 to March 2, 2025. However, a spot check by The Standard on Tuesday revealed that some schools had already begun sending students home nearly a week ahead of schedule.
The sudden change has caught parents off guard, with many scrambling to make adjustments for their children’s early return. While school administrators have not issued official explanations, sources indicate that factors such as financial constraints, school unrest, or administrative challenges could be behind the abrupt decision.
Some parents have expressed frustration over the lack of communication, questioning why schools did not provide adequate notice. “We plan our budgets based on the school calendar, and this unexpected break is an inconvenience,” said a concerned parent in Nairobi.
The Ministry of Education is yet to respond to the situation, leaving uncertainty over whether all schools will follow suit.
Education stakeholders are now calling for clarity on the matter to ensure that academic programs remain uninterrupted.
