Meru leaders will hold a crucial meeting in mid-March as part of efforts to unite the community ahead of the 2027 elections.

The meeting, scheduled for March 14 in Meru, will bring together political leaders from the community, businesspeople, opinion leaders, and clergy.

In the lead-up to the major gathering, politicians from the region will hold consultative forums to craft the agenda and build consensus.

On Tuesday evening, a section of MPs and political leaders from the county met at the Karen home of a Meru legislator to lay the groundwork for the meeting.

This session took place just hours after Deputy President Kithure Kindiki hosted at least 3,000 leaders from Meru County at his Karen residence.

The meeting at the MP’s home was attended by 47 MCAs, at least eight MPs and Njuri Ncheke elders.

Former Cabinet Secretaries Peter Munya and Mithika Linturi, along with former minister Kiraitu Murungi, were also present.

This marked the first time the three political heavyweights came together after years of rivalry over the Meru Governor’s seat, signalling possible plans to work together.

During the meeting, the leaders agreed to hold the Meru summit on March 14 and 15 as part of efforts to unify the community.

Meru Assembly Majority Whip Jim Muchui said the meeting was long overdue and necessary to bring stability to the county.

“The meeting was planned long before the Deputy President’s consultative forum. There has been a dire need for political direction in Meru,” he said.

“We have agreed to set aside our political differences and address any threats facing the Meru community.”

Meru County Assembly Deputy Speaker Mwenda Ali described the summit as “the beginning of efforts to unify Meru leadership.”

“Meru is in a serious mess, yet nothing is being done to correct it. We have agreed that March 14 will be Meru’s day of independence,” he said.

However, allies of Governor Kawira Mwangaza dismissed the meeting as a ploy by her rivals to remove her from office.

“This is not the first time former leaders have come together. When I led the fight against the governor, we met several times but did not succeed,” said former Meru Majority Leader Evans Mawira.
