Kenya’s boda boda operators have issued a stern warning to the government, threatening nationwide protests over the controversial Public Transport Bill 2023. The Boda Boda Association of Kenya claims the proposed law will cripple their businesses and unfairly regulate the sector without proper stakeholder engagement.
At the heart of their grievances are strict licensing requirements, higher levies, and increased government oversight, which they argue will push many riders out of work. Speaking at a press briefing, association leaders vowed to mobilize thousands of riders across the country if the government does not address their concerns.
“We are tired of being treated like second-class citizens in the transport sector. This Bill, if passed, will destroy livelihoods and make it impossible for many riders to operate,” said the association’s chairperson.
The proposed legislation seeks to streamline the chaotic boda boda industry by enforcing stricter safety measures, designated pick-up points, and structured fare regulations. However, operators argue that the government is implementing these measures without consulting them, creating policies that favor big transport players while sidelining small-scale riders.
With tensions rising, political leaders and transport stakeholders have called for urgent dialogue to prevent mass protests that could disrupt transport services nationwide. If the government fails to act swiftly, Kenya could witness one of the largest demonstrations by boda boda operators in recent years, further straining relations between the sector and authorities.
