Concerns are mounting over alleged plans to deploy National Intelligence Service (NIS) officers in universities, with critics warning that such a move could stifle academic freedom and student activism.
Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen has found himself at the center of the storm after reports emerged that the government is considering using intelligence officers to monitor student activities in higher learning institutions. The move, reportedly aimed at curbing radicalization and criminal activities, has sparked outrage among student leaders and education stakeholders.
Speaking on Monday, several student union representatives warned that universities should remain spaces of free thought and intellectual debate, not centers of surveillance. “This is intimidation, and we will not allow it. Universities are places for learning, not spying,” one student leader stated.
Political analysts argue that the government should focus on addressing the root causes of unrest in universities rather than resorting to intelligence tactics. “Most student protests stem from issues like high fees, poor living conditions, and unemployment fears. Deploying NIS officers is not the solution,” a lecturer from the University of Nairobi observed.
Murkomen, however, has yet to issue a direct statement on the matter, but sources indicate that discussions on enhancing security in universities are ongoing.
With the opposition also weighing in, the debate is far from over. The big question remains—will surveillance in universities safeguard students or suppress their voices? Only time will tell.
