A high school principal has come under scrutiny following allegations of mismanaging school funds by directing parents to deposit school fees through a mobile money shop linked to a private account. The Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ) has stepped in, demanding reforms to improve transparency and parental involvement at Lufinga Girls Secondary School.
The probe began after a concerned parent lodged a formal complaint with CAJ, alleging corruption, unfair treatment of students, and exclusion of parents from school matters. According to the complaint, the principal not only failed to hold meetings with parents but also mishandled school funds by collecting fees through a mobile money shop instead of the official school account.
“I am a parent at the school, and the principal is deeply corrupt. Despite us paying school fees, students are not receiving adequate food. Additionally, school employees have been seen depositing money into an account that appears to be personal,” the parent’s letter read.
Following the complaint, CAJ called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to investigate the allegations and provide a report within 21 days. In response, TSC formed an independent panel to assess the claims.
The investigation confirmed that the principal had failed to involve parents in key school affairs. As a result, the TSC directed the principal to establish a Parents’ Association to foster transparency and improve communication between the school administration and parents.
However, the panel dismissed other accusations, including claims of financial misconduct and failing to provide food to students, citing a lack of sufficient evidence.
This case highlights ongoing efforts by government agencies to enhance accountability in public institutions. The move to introduce a Parents’ Association aligns with broader education sector reforms aimed at ensuring financial transparency and parental participation in school governance.
Authorities have warned that any school found violating financial management regulations will face strict penalties. Parents are encouraged to report any irregularities to ensure that school funds are used appropriately for the benefit of students.
