The growing political rift between President William Ruto’s allies and former Deputy President Hon. Rigathi Gachagua’s camp may force an urgent recall of Members of Parliament from their recess. Gachagua’s allies, led by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, have openly declared that anyone from Mt Kenya accepting a government appointment under Ruto is a “traitor.”
As KTN TV reports, Gachagua’s allies continue to insist that the only position the Mt Kenya region deserves is the presidency, further straining relations within the Kenya Kwanza coalition. The political tensions come at a time when the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government lacks a substantive CS following Kithure Kindiki’s promotion to Deputy President.
For now, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi is acting in this role, along with managing the Gender docket. However, if Ruto nominates a candidate for the Interior Ministry before February 2025, MPs will have to return from recess to vet and approve the nominee.

Suggestions that former Health CS Mutai Kagwe could take up the Interior and National Administration docket have sparked further disagreements. Gachagua’s allies and supporters strongly oppose any Mt Kenya leader, including Mutahi Kagwe, accepting such a role, viewing it as a betrayal. This is after their leader was removed from power by the same government.
This pushback is reportedly delaying Ruto’s efforts to fill the crucial position, complicating the government’s internal coordination. The urgency to appoint a new Interior CS has now become a test of political loyalty and regional interests. If President Ruto proceeds with a nomination, it could escalate the already tense standoff between the two camps, making the recall of MPs from recess inevitable.
This brewing confrontation between Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp shows the deepening cracks within the ruling coalition as both sides struggle to assert their influence.
