Why Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford not in Man Utd squad vs City, Ruben Amorim speaks out

Ruben Amorim took the biggest decision of his time as Manchester United’s head coach on Sunday.

When the Manchester United squad to take on Manchester City was announced, there were two glaring absences who were not even on the bench.

Ahead of arguably the biggest game of the season, Ruben Amorim’s decisions in terms of squad selection are stealing all the headlines.

The 39-year-old will live and die by his decisions at the Etihad on Sunday – but even in the event of a successful afternoon, his decision to leave out both Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford will make waves that will reverberate for the rest of the week.

Now, with both Garnacho and Rashford absent, the boss has explained why with a brutally honest verdict.

Why Ruben Amorim left out Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho

When the team was announced at 3.15 pm on Sunday afternoon, we could hardly believe our eyes to find either a No.10 or No.17 listed.

Excluding both Garnacho and Rashford is a bold decision from Amorim, and before the game, he has told Sky Sports why he made the decision – and it was not injury-related.

“I pay attention to everything, the way you eat, the way you put your clothes to go to a game. Everything. I make my evaluation and then I decide.

“There is a communication after the last training. They are alright. They had training this morning and I was there. They trained really well.”

This is a pretty damning verdict on the pair who have been the subject of plenty of criticism from fans in recent weeks.

It also comes amid links suggesting Rashford could exit the club in 2025 – this certainly strengthens that argument.

Manchester United have a serious problem

Not only has Amorim left out arguably the two most valuable United players on paper, but also the timing is a sign of how unhappy he must be with the pair.

Leaving out Rashford and Garnacho for the 195th Manchester Derby especially is a massive statement in itself – which suggests there is a lot more to the story.

While it is very bold, we cannot help but rate the decision by Amorim as it shows he is not prepared to let the players walk all over him – which has been the downfall of previous managers.

The club should be backing Amorim over any player so now, either Garnacho and Rashford buck their ideas up, or they will be involved in Ineos’ brutal rebuild in 2025.
