Treasury CS John Mbadi has released statement after President William Ruto orders the cancellation of major contracts with India’s Adani Group, impacting both the energy and aviation sectors.
CS John Mbadi explained that these Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreements were still in their early stages, making it easy to back out without facing legal issues. He stated, “The beauty is that it can be stopped at any stage before negotiations are concluded.”
The proposed deals included a Ksh.260 billion upgrade for Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and a Ksh.95 billion power transmission project. However, concerns arose during due diligence about Adani’s operations, leading to this decisive action.
Ruto’s directive follows serious allegations against Adani in the U.S., where executives face bribery and fraud charges. This move reflects a commitment to transparency and accountability in governance, as Ruto emphasized the need to safeguard national interests.
What do you think about this sudden shift? Is it a win for accountability or a setback for infrastructure development? Share your thoughts below.
