President William Ruto has today during his State of the Nation Address directed government agencies and ministry of Transport to cancel all contracts involving India’s Adani Group in Kenya.
The president’s announcement which caught the country by surprise comes after months of public outcry over alleged lack of transparency and accountability in the company’s dealings. Some of the controversial projects included the proposed takeover of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and energy transmission projects valued at billions of shillings.
Critics, including the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and human rights groups, argued that the agreements posed financial risks to Kenya and lacked competitive bidding processes. These deals were also challenged in court for failing to align with Kenya’s Public-Private Partnership Act.
President Ruto initially defended the Adani Group’s involvement, highlighting their private funding of projects, which he described as relieving taxpayers of debt burdens. However, growing public pressure and legal challenges appear to have prompted his change in stance.
