Tanzanians have taken to social media to mock their East African neighbors, Kenyans, after Tanzania secured a spot in the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). Kenya, on the other hand, failed to qualify following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in South Africa last week.
Tanzania’s Taifa Stars earned their place in next year’s finals with a 1-0 victory over Guinea at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Tuesday. The achievement sparked celebrations among Tanzanians, who took the opportunity to ridicule the Harambee Stars’ misfortune.
The jubilant Tanzanians flooded social media platforms with memes and comments, many of which poked fun at Kenya’s struggles both on and off the pitch.
One Tanzanian wrote on X: “Wakati Jirani anajivunia Kiingereza sisi tutakua AFCON huku yeye akiwa anaangalia kwenye TV ambazo waliziiba kwenye maandamano,” which loosely translates to: “While our neighbors take pride in speaking English, we’ll be at AFCON while they watch on stolen TVs from their protests.”
Another Tanzanian on X wrote: “We’ll carry our neighbors to Morocco as our translators. Jumuiya must be represented!”
Another Tanzanian added: “Kenya ni kuandamana tuu, kwenda AFCON hawataki,” translating to: “Kenya only protests; they don’t want to qualify for AFCON.”
“Heri wametolewa wakahangaikie unga,” added another Tanzanian which translates to: “Better they were eliminated so they can focus on maize flour.”
“Wao mabingwa wa kuandamana tu (They’re champions of protests, not football),” trolled another Tanzanian.
Kenya last qualified for AFCON in 2019 during the tournament held in Egypt. In contrast, Tanzania has now earned a spot in three of the last four editions, marking a period of consistent improvement for the Taifa Stars.
