Why UoN Council Faces Action Over Controversial Appointment

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has threatened to take legal action against the University of Nairobi (UoN) Council for disregarding its advisory on a controversial staff appointment.

The EACC’s warning follows the university council’s decision to proceed with the appointment despite concerns raised about its legality and potential ethical breaches.

The controversy surrounds the appointment of a senior official at the university, which has been criticized for not adhering to proper procedures.

The EACC had previously issued a formal advisory to the UoN Council, advising them to reconsider the appointment, citing concerns about conflicts of interest, lack of transparency, and failure to follow the proper recruitment process.

However, the council ignored the advisory and proceeded with the appointment, prompting the EACC to issue a stern warning.

In a statement, the EACC emphasized that the council’s actions could be in violation of the Public Service Commission regulations and ethical standards set for public institutions.

The Commission reminded the UoN Council that public office appointments must be made in a manner that is transparent, fair, and free from any form of bias or undue influence.

The university has yet to respond to the EACC’s threat of action, but the move has sparked widespread criticism among academic staff and students, who are concerned about the integrity of the institution’s leadership.

Many have called for greater transparency in the appointment process and for the university council to respect the advisory from the EACC.

If the council fails to take corrective measures, the EACC has indicated it will not hesitate to initiate investigations and take appropriate legal action, including referring the matter to relevant authorities.

The standoff highlights growing concerns over governance and accountability within public institutions in Kenya.
