Kikuyu MP and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has urged President William Ruto to take swift action to strengthen communication around government projects, particularly at the grassroots level.
Addressing the National Assembly, Ichung’wah acknowledged that the proposed Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), also known as SHA, is poorly understood by Kenyans.
He stressed that this lack of awareness has led to widespread misunderstanding, with some Kenyans even mistakenly referring to it as “Chief” rather than SHIF.
Ichung’wah emphasized that the miscommunication is giving the government’s political opponents an opportunity to exploit the situation.
He requested that President Ruto “crack the whip” on those responsible for public messaging and grassroots promotion to improve clarity on SHIF and other critical projects.
“The people don’t want anything to do with SHIF or SHA simply because they haven’t been fully informed about it,” Ichung’wah stated, adding that effective grassroots communication is essential to gaining public support.
He expressed confidence that with better outreach and education, Kenyans would come to understand and support SHIF, ultimately helping the government achieve its objectives in public healthcare reform.
