A Kenyan man who is serving a 40-year sentence at a Naivasha prison has opened up on how he ended up in jail for a second time after completing a four-year sentence.
Joseph Opama narrated that his woes started after he completed the initial jail sentence and a man approached him with a promise of KSh 80,000 if he killed his wife.
Speaking to Inooro TV, the inmate said he was compelled to take up the job due to his financial struggles, saying the money would have helped him stay afloat.
“The man was aware that I was a former inmate, so he asked me if I could accept the job as a hitman. He told me he would pay me KSh 80,000, and I needed the money to get my life off the ground as I had just left jail,” he recalled.

Opama claimed the man informed him that the woman would be alone on a Sunday, and he asked him to stage a burglary and also kill her.
“On the said day, on a Sunday, I went to the woman’s home and killed her. When she saw me breaking into her house, she was shocked that she could not speak,” he said adding the man and wife had fallen out over their properties.
He said he had been paid a deposit of KSh 20,000, but the man who hired him allegedly started chasing him around for the rest of the payment even after he had committed the heinous crime.
He says he was never paid the balance of KSh 60,000.
“I was arrested because I was caught in possession of the dead woman’s phone and ID card. I had taken them so that I could withdraw money from her Mpesa. I did not reveal to the police that I had been hired as a hitman because I wanted the man to bring me the rest of my money,” he added.
He was remanded in 2021 and sentenced to 40 years in jail. His sentence ends in 2050.
“I have already made appeals and given this information, but a paralegal told me it was too late. I hope I will get another chance or at least a sentence reduction because that man used me. I deeply regret taking away that woman’s life. I thought about how I left a family without a mother and I deeply regretted my actions,” he stated.
