Third Way Alliance Party Leader Ekuru Aukot has elicited sharp reactions on social media after revealing who he voted for in the hotly contested USA elections.
Through his X space, Aukot, who was a presidential candidate in Kenya in 2017, revealed that he had voted for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris who is competing against Republican Donald Trump.
Aukot went ahead to post a picture of his marked ballot paper as a prove of voting for Harris.
It is a move that elicited reactions, with Kenyans questioning whether he had dual citizenship. Others wondered why Aukot ran for Kenya’s presidency in 2017 yet he is an American citizen.
US election results are sometimes declared state-by-state within hours of the polls closing, meaning that we get a running tally as we go , but this year’s tight contest could mean a longer wait.
The first polls close at 18:00 EST (23:00 GMT) on Tuesday evening and the last at 01:00 EST (06:00 GMT) early on Wednesday.
Harris and Trump tied with three votes each in the tiny New Hampshire community of Dixville Notch, which opened and closed its poll just after midnight ET in a decades-old tradition.
Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump each need at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.
Here are some reactions from Kenyans on Ekuru’s tweet:
“Kumbe this guy Ukuru Aukot is a citizen of America no wonder he talks like colonial we will impeach you men, Mogotio is not your home”
“So Ekuru Aukot, who purports to have participated in writing the Constitution of Kenya 2010, voted in American elections? This clearly means he has American citizenship and he wanted to be Kenya’s president which a dual citizen should not vie for! Kenya has crooks in everything”
