Major Changes Within Police Service Take Place in Central Kenya & Gachagua’s Hometown Nyeri

The residents of Kagio in Kirinyaga County felt compelled to publicly demonstrate their support for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday, October 16th.

Just a day prior in the same county, hundreds of women in Kutus town passionately rallied behind former Governor Anne Waiguru as a potential replacement deputy president. With fervor, the leaders of all 20 wards endorsed Waiguru, declaring that Kenya was ready for a woman to assume the second highest office.

While the political drama escalates, some major reshuffling of police leadership has simultaneously and quietly taken place in Central Kenya, notably in DP Gachagua’s home county of Nyeri.

According to insider reports, the timing of these security changes raises suspicion of political motivation, coinciding precisely with the impeachment attempt against Gachagua.

For example, Nyeri County now has a new police commander, David Kipchichir, taking over the helm. Additionally, a new head of the powerful Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been assigned to oversee Gachagua’s home area of Mathira.

Even at the local level, Nyeri Sub-County is now under new leadership. Wilfred Mugure has replaced Charles Chacha as sub-county commander, while Paul Makange now spearheads regional DCI operations.

Beyond the police force, personnel changes have impacted the regional administration as well. Pius Murugu now pulls double duty as both Nyeri County Commissioner and acting chair of the Central Region’s formidable security council, having unceremoniously replaced his predecessor, Ahmed Bore.

While public suspicion swirls over the timing, police spokesperson Dr. Resila Anyango insists these leadership changes represent nothing more than routine personnel transfers that are simply coincidental. Yet for some, in the backdrop of the intensifying impeachment bid against DP Gachagua, the sudden reshuffling of regional security chiefs smells of political strategy.
