The Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Health, State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, Dr. Josephine Mburu, recently met with the Cuban Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Juan Manuel Rodriguez Vazquez, to discuss the progress of cooperation between the two countries in the field of health. The bilateral agreement signed between Kenya and Cuba in 2018, which aims to enhance cooperation in the exchange and training of health workers as well as research lapses, is set to lapse in June 2023.

During the meeting, Dr. Mburu reiterated the Kenyan government’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage and welcomed further collaboration with Cuba to strengthen the Primary Health Care systems. This is a critical driver in achieving the goal of Universal Health Coverage. The collaboration between Kenya and Cuba has been fruitful so far, and the meeting presented an opportunity to assess progress and explore new areas of partnership.

The partnership between Kenya and Cuba has seen the exchange of health professionals and the training of Kenyan doctors in Cuba. Cuba has also provided medical supplies and equipment to Kenya, and their expertise in the field of medicine has been invaluable. With the agreement set to lapse soon, both parties are keen on exploring new areas of cooperation that will benefit the health sector in Kenya.
