Video: Another Batch of Students Set to Leave For Finland Amid Controversy Surrounding Scholarship

Amid the controversy engulfing the ambitious Finland overseas program run by Uasin Gishu county, governor Jonathan Bii has today overseen a flag off exercise of another batch of students set to travel to Finland, to be enrolled in different universities.

In the ongoing event at Eldoret town, the county’s leadership has expressed its unwavering commitment to fulfill the objectives of the ambitious project that is currently mared with corruption allegations running to tens of millions.

In the past few weeks the program has been under scrutiny after it emerged that massive misappropriation of funds given out by parents to support the initiative might have been looted by highly connected individuals in the County government.

This was after over 200 students who are currently in the European country made a distress call to authorities in Kenya after they were threatened with deportation, over nonpayment of tuition and accommodation fees, making them to be viewed as a burden to their various institutions.

According to the students who spoke to the media, their various universities gave out strict ultimatums of fees payment, failure to which they’ll be required to vacate the hostels and the country.

Shockingly the tribulations of the students already in Finland came about even after their parents had contributed school fees worth Ksh. 1.19 million to the fund before leaving the country. A fund that MCAs later claim has been operating like a personal account.

Meanwhile, three county officials Joseph Maritim, Joel Ruto and Meshak Rono who have been linked to the scandal have since been suspended, and subsequently, a request made by the county assembly to have them investigated by the DCI and EACC.
