Just a day after the US government issued a security advisory, advising its citizens living in Kenya to beware of a possible terror attack in Kenya, Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has today, 10 February 2023, held a meeting with a powerful leader.
Reports from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have revealed that Duale held a meeting with the Director of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT) Dr Jehangir Khan who paid him a courtesy visit at the Defence Headquarters.
KDF has said the CS outlined to Dr Jehangir Khan the commitment of the Kenya military to fight terror, efforts that have been boosted by the creation of a regional UNCCT office in Nairobi to enhance the UN agenda to fight terrorism.
Aden Duale further appreciated the wide range of programs UNCCT that has rolled out in the country which included infrastructure protection, border security, cyber security and technologies, and counter-violent extremism targeting the youths among other programs.
On his side, Dr Jehangir acknowledged the role that the country has played in combating terrorism in the region noting that Kenya has been a victim of terrorism-related activities in the past.
Duale’s crucial meeting with the Director of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre is happening a day after the US and the UK warned their citizens, asking them to be vigilant on the watch out while in public places, especially those that are frequented by foreigners and tourists in Kenya.
The US listed high-traffic areas frequented by foreigners and tourists in Nairobi and elsewhere in Kenya.
“Terrorist groups could attack with little or no warning, targeting hotels, embassies, restaurants, malls and markets, schools, police stations, places of worship, and other places frequented by foreigners and tourists. The government of Kenya has increased counterterrorism patrols,” the US said.
