Casemiro was not Erik Ten Hag’s first-choice midfielder; he was simply a backup option, but he is playing as if he were Ten Hag’s dream signing. Prior to this season, United’s midfield was atrocious, with holes appearing in every game. Ten Hag had to do something about United’s engine room if he was to succeed. His first thought must have been to sign Frankie de Jong, whom he must have seen as an “antidote” to United’s midfield. Unfortunately, De Jong turned down a move to Manchester United. Ten Hag turned to Casemiro after the Dutchman snubbed him, and he chose to pay £59 million to bring him to Old Trafford.
Casemiro has been outstanding for United. To sum up his impact at United, I’d quote his teammates, who have been blown away by the five-time Champions League winner. Casemiro posted this on Instagram after another dominant performance for United against Bournemouth, in which he not only scored (in the 3-0 Bournemouth win) but was also named the fan’s man of the match:
A number of his United teammates hijacked the post to tell him what a player he is. Garnacho commented, “You play too much”; Rashford commented, “The Rock”; and Tyrell Malacia had no words to describe Casemiro; he commented with a fire emoji.
There’s no doubt what an impact Casemiro has had on United; where would this team be without him at the moment?
