M23 Movement on Wednesday night released a statement after the military reportedly used heavy weapons and fighter jets to hit them from their strongholds.
In the statement released by the group’s political spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka, DRC Forces reportedly used fighter jets and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) to hit the rebels.
Kanyuka said in the attack, internally displaced people were also allegedly targeted by the military
“This Wednesday, December 28″h, 2022, the DRC Government’s coalition used heavy artillery and fighter jets SUKHOI to deliberately launch attacks aiming at the displaced populations (IDP) who have sought refuge in the areas under our control, fleeing exactions committed against them by the said coalition,” read the statement in part.
M23 has since threatened to launch defensive attacks against the DRC Forces and armed groups that support the government forces.
“M23 will continue to defend itself and protect the civilian populations in the areas under its control,” M23 added.
They further urged regional leaders who have been facilitating peace talks to help them have a direct talk with the government of DRC so that a long-lasting solution is reached.
