Hello guys and welcome to this article. Today we are going to check out on the top five animals which have more than one heart.
5. Octopus.
Octopuses contain three hearts, one systemic heart, and two branchial hearts. Two of the hearts perform the same function, while the third evolved for a different reason. The systemic heart pumps blood around an octopus’s body, while its two branchial hearts pump blood through its two gills. Since octopus blood is very copper-rich, it’s exceptionally viscous. As a result, it requires a significant amount of pressure to pump blood through its body.
4. Squid.
Just like the octopuses, squids also have got three hearts. Its systemic heart pumps blood around its body, while its two branchial hearts pump oxygen through its gills. All three hearts rest inside a squid’s mantle cavity, a seawater-filled sac containing the organs that carry out respiration and excretion.
3. Hagfish.
Hagfish have got a unique characteristic that other animals don’t posses. They are the only animals that have a skull but no vertebral column. The hagfish is usually ranked highly among the animals that have multiple hearts in terms of its sheer bizarreness. Hagfish have got four hearts unlike the octopus and squid. One heart serves as the systemic heart responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. The other three operate as auxiliary hearts, which aid the circulatory system in pumping blood.
2. Cuttlefish.
The blood of cuttlefish appears more green-blue than red due to the high amount of hemocyanin present. Cuttlefish possess a closed circulatory system. Like squids and octopuses, cuttlefish have three hearts. In addition, their hearts operate similarly to their fellow cephalopods. As you already know, the systemic heart pumps blood throughout the body, while the two branchial hearts’ sole role involves moving blood through the cuttlefish’s gills.
1. Earthworm.Â
Last but not least amongst the animals that have more than one heart are the earthworms. The earthworm actually does not have a heart, but rather possesses 5 aortic arches that pump blood through its body. This closed circulatory system carries food, waste, and respiratory gases throughout the earthworm’s body. In total, five blood vessels make up the aortic arch. The dorsal vessel is located above its digestive tract and primarily moves blood forward. Meanwhile, the other four vessels, the ventral, subneural, and two lateroneural vessels, work to carry blood backward.Â
I have heard of many people saying that a cat has got also more than one heart or life. From my side I actually don’t know, maybe you can leave down your opinions on the comments section?
