Skincare for men: A beginner’s guide for every man

When it comes to skincare routines we traditionally associate it with women, but more and more men are realising the importance of taking care of their skin.

Proper skincare can help men look and feel their best, reduce the appearance of ageing, and prevent skin problems.

However many men don’t know where to start. Here is a beginner’s guide to skincare for all men.

Cleansing

This is the most basic step. Wash your face twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, to remove dirt, oil, and sweat.

Avoid harsh soaps that can strip your skin of natural oils and opt for a gentle cleanser that is suitable for your skin type.

When cleansing your face do not use hot water. Use lukewarm water instead to avoid skin irritation.

Don’t rub your skin dry. Gently pat your face dry with a clean towel.

Moisturising

This is a crucial step in your skincare routine. Always apply a moisturiser to your face after cleansing to keep your skin hydrated.

Choose a moisturiser that is appropriate for your skin type. If you have oily skin, opt for a lightweight moisturiser. If you have dry skin, select a richer cream.

Remember to always use sunscreen.

If you’re going to be spending time outdoors, use a moisturiser with SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your neck and ears.

Exfoliation

Exfoliate your skin once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores.

Use a gentle exfoliating scrub or a loofah. Avoid scrubbing too hard, as this can irritate your skin.

Shaving

Before shaving, soften your beard with a warm towel or shaving cream.

Always use a sharp razor to avoid irritation and ingrown hairs.

Apply a shaving cream or gel to create a barrier between your skin and the razor.

After shaving, apply an alcohol-free aftershave to soothe your skin.
