GPHA: 45% of heavy-duty operational staff suffer low-back pain

Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has highlighted the occupational health risks associated with physically demanding port operations, citing research that found about 45% of its heavy-duty operational staff experienced low-back pain.

Dr Emmanuel Mintah-Benyin, Senior Medical Officer at the GPHA Clinic and Deputy Head of Health Services at GPHA Tema, disclosed that a study he conducted in 2022 as part of his Master of Public Health (MPH) programme recorded the prevalence among the workers.

Speaking at a media forum organised by the GPHA, Dr Mintah-Benyin attributed the condition to factors including age, strenuous and repetitive activities, prolonged sitting and poor posture.

He said port workers were exposed to several occupational health risks beyond musculoskeletal disorders, including hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. Demanding work schedules, irregular eating patterns, stress and unhealthy coping mechanisms, he noted, could further worsen their health.

Dr Mintah-Benyin also identified workplace accidents as a major concern, particularly those involving moving vehicles, poor visibility during night operations and other hazardous conditions.

According to him, seafarers face additional challenges from prolonged periods at sea, difficult weather conditions and security threats such as piracy and robbery. Extended periods away from family and normal social environments could also contribute to mental stress and exhaustion.

He urged workers not to ignore persistent back pain, fatigue, breathing difficulties or changes in concentration and emotional wellbeing, warning that untreated back pain could eventually lead to serious spinal problems, loss of mobility and extensive medical intervention.

Dr Mintah-Benyin called for stronger occupational health programmes, regular health surveillance and workplace interventions, including ergonomic designs, appropriate personal protective equipment and proper training.

He said employers should, where possible, eliminate or substitute workplace hazards, introduce engineering controls, adjust work schedules and reassign workers whose health conditions made particular duties unsafe.

He noted that the GPHA had introduced measures such as quarterly health walks, an employee gym and a three-tier shift system to promote healthier lifestyles, manage fatigue and reduce prolonged operational exposure.

“Your health is the most valuable tool you have; take charge of it. Pay attention to your body, don’t ignore persistent signs, and don’t wait until you feel sick to get screened,” he said.

Dr Mintah-Benyin stressed that protecting the health of workers was essential to improving safety, productivity and quality of life across the maritime industry.
