DJI, a company which provides drone technology, has announced its new geofencing system which will provide guidance to drones even on locations where flights may be restricted. It will only be launched for North America and Europe for now while other regions will receive an update to airport data.
The Geospatial Environment Online (GEO) will offer access to live information on temporary flight restrictions and first time restrictions around prisons, power plants etc to DJI drone users at the time of flight.
Also, the application has been designed to restrict drones from flying off to areas that have security concern. With a verified DJI accounts, users will be able to self-authorise or temporarily unlock drones in national-security locations such as Washington D.C.
“DJI invented geofencing over two years ago and now continues its industry leadership by balancing enhanced safety with the flexibility of accountable self-authorization. We believe this major upgrade to our geofencing system will do even more to help operators understand their local flight environment, and to make smart, educated decisions about when and where to fly their drones,” said Brendan Schulman, DJI’s Vice President of Policy and Legal Affairs.
The company has said that creating a verified account would require users credit card, debit card or mobile number but the system will not save any of these details and also that the service will be free.
It is powered by Santa Monica, California-based AirMap, which will be available in December via an update.
