MEC unveils R60 million state-of-the-art linac machine at Livingstone Hospital

MEC Ntandokazi Capa officially unveiled a state-of-the-art linear accelerator (linac) machine at Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha today. This significant investment of R60 million marks a major step forward in improving cancer treatment in the Western region.

The unveiling coincided with the first treatment of a cancer patient using this advanced technology, signalling the department’s continued commitment to addressing the cancer therapy backlog in the province.

In addition to the Gqeberha machine, the Department of Health has also invested in a similar machine for the central region, stationed at Frere Hospital in East London.

The ongoing construction of a new oncology unit at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha, valued at R412 million, is making steady progress, promising further advancements in cancer care for the region.

The MEC emphasised the importance of early cancer detection, urging citizens to come forward for screenings. “We want our people to know that early detection is key. The sooner cancer is identified, the better the chances of effective treatment,” said MEC Capa.

She highlighted that these investments are critical to ensuring accessible, quality care for cancer patients throughout the region.
