Dubai princess divorces her husband via Instagram

A royal princess from Dubai, Sheikha Mahra bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has apparently announced her divorce from her husband via Instagram.

The announcement came only months after they celebrated their first wedding anniversary and the birth of their daughter, Mahra in May 2024.

The announcement by Sheikha Mahra bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is the daughter of Dubai’s ruler and United Arab Emirates prime minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is an unprecedented move for members of the United Arab Emirates royal family.

The princess has 691 000 Instagram followers.

“As you are occupied with other companions, I hereby declare our divorce,” the princess, 30, wrote in an Instagram post.

Since the announcement, the princess has also removed all social media posts of Sheikh Mana, keeping her photos solely to updates about her philanthropic projects and her baby daughter.

In her social media post, Sheikha Mahra seemingly invoked the practice of a triple divorce or talaq thalatha.

“I divorce you, I divorce you, and I divorce you,” Sheikha Mahra added. “Take care. Your ex-wife.”

In Sunni Islam, the largest branch of Islam, the triple repudiation, or other similar pronouncements that lead to absolute divorces (talaq al-batta), is considered to be reprehensible (makruh).

Even though triple repudiation is disapproved, traditional Sunni jurists nonetheless consider it effective and binding.

The practice is used in some Muslim countries and is not usually invoked by women.
