Gunna Denied Bond In YSL RICO Case, Judge Sets Trial Date For 2023

Looks like summer 2022 will go on without the popular sounds of music from Atlanta rappers Young Thug and Gunna. Gunna surrendered to Fulton County authorities on a racketeering charge on May 11th, and was denied bond the next day. The ‘Wunna’ rapper stood before a judge on Monday and was once again denied bond for the indictment.

According to Jewel Wicker of Billboard, Gunna pleaded not guilty the RICO charge, as prosecutors allege he and other members of Young Slime Life have engaged in criminal activity since 2012.

The prosecution reportedly argued that Gunna was “not just an associate” of the group, but a “documented gang member” who was “one of the bosses” in a “command position.” Prosecutors also mentioned Gunna “directed troops into combat” while referencing lyrics from some of his rap songs as alleged evidence.

The Fulton County judge denied Gunna’s bond saying he was concerned the rapper could be a “danger to witnesses and other folks tied to this.”

Despite the allegations against the Atlanta rapper, his legal team is denying his involvement in any gang activity and previously released a statement slamming the prosecution for using song lyrics as part of their case.

It is intensely problematic that the state relies on song lyrics as part of its allegations. These lyrics are an artist’s creative expression and not a literal recounting of facts and circumstances. Under the state’s theory, any artist with a song referencing violence could find herself the victim of a RICO indictment. The allegations in the indictment, so thin as to be transparent, support Mr. Kitchens’ motion for bond.”

Young Thug was also scheduled to stand before a judge on Monday.

Gunna’s trial date has been set for Jan. 9, 2023.
