In a new interview with People, the pair broke down the origins of their friendship saga.

So here’s the deal: Oprah and Gayle used to work at Baltimore TV station WJZ-TV way back when. The former was a news anchor, while the latter was a production assistant and writer.

One night, a huge snowstorm was hitting the city — and even though they didn’t know each other too well at the time, Oprah offered Gayle a place to stay for the night to weather out the storm.

“We ended up talking all night long,” Oprah recalls about the night that brought them both together.

What’s more, Oprah even lent Gayle a toothbrush and a dress to wear to work the next day.

“It was purple with a scoop neck and bell sleeves,” King recalled about the dress in question. “We’ve literally been friends ever since.”

Part of why the pair’s friendship is so strong is because, as she admitted last year, Oprah keeps a pretty tight circle to begin with.

In fact, Oprah said that she really only has three close friends: Gayle, journalist Maria Shriver, and her personal trainer Bob Greene. “That’s about it, you know?” she stated.
