WWE Immortals game review: Don’t try this on your device

WWE Immortals is a pastiche of popular 1v1 combat games released years before Warner Bros decided to put their money on this wrestling franchise. Calling Immortals a wrestling game itself is a white lie. DC Comics successfully replicated Mortal Kombat into Injustice League for mobile devices, and Warner Bros did about the same for Immortals. Immortals may not have the same elaborate finishing moves we saw in Injustice League, but the wrestling characters have a demonic touch to them.

Gamers get to play as a poisonous ‘Viper’ Randy Ortan, who looks like the Lizard from Amazing Spiderman film, ‘The Demon’ Kane and ‘Dark Sorceress’ Paige to name a few characters in the roster.

The object of the game is to win matches and upgrade your character strengths. Every match is a three-way tag team fight in a Mordor like set. As you set out annihilating rivals like pawns in a chess game, the opposition gets stronger and harder to beat. Their power and health levels surge and characters such as ‘Deadman’ Undertaker have to be dealt with. And Undertaker, mind you, is one character which can rise from the dead once per match.

What this game lacks is adrenaline-pumping game entrances, filled with pyrotechnics, which fans generally associate wrestling with. But Immortals makes up for it with over the top finishing moves that definitely cannot be tried at home.

However, it feels like there is something missing from Immortals. Watching Flash from Injustice League run around the world at light speed to deliver the knockout punch was fun. This certainly cannot be said for Big Show smashing an opponent’s skull using his knee as an anvil. But, then again, more finishing moves are unlocked as the game progresses. From the two-hours of gameplay, we felt Immortals can be addictive but gamers familiar with Injustice League can save a huge amount of space on their device by ignoring this version.

Verdict: If there is a gamer unfamiliar with Mortal Kombat then this game is for them. If you are a veteran and has seen it all and played it all then you are better off twiddling your thumbs elsewhere. Immortals is available on Android and iOS platforms.
