Scream is having a renaissance moment right now. Thanks to the success of its fifth and latest installment, lots of people are talking about the classic slasher series this year — including Kristen Stewart, who apparently turned down a role in one of the earlier sequels.

Some of you probably remember watching Scream 4 in theaters back in the day. The movie premiered in 2011 and featured Emma Roberts and Lucy Hale as franchise newcomers, in addition to familiar faces like Courteney Cox and David Arquette.

Scream 4‘s opening sequence sees the film’s masked villain strike at a home where two young women are hanging out late one night. The scene pays homage to Drew Barrymore‘s iconic and unfortunately short-lived performance in Wes Craven’s 1996 original.
Anyway, Kristen was originally meant to act that in scene. But, as the Oscar nominee recalled in a new interview with Slant, she declined the offer so as not to “touch” Drew’s legacy.

“So it’s the Drew [Barrymore] character that gets killed in the beginning,” Kristen said of the part she almost played in Scream 4. “They created a whole sequence where a lot of people got killed to emulate the Drew thing. But it was just going to be one person, and I was like, ‘I can’t do a Drew. I can’t touch that.’ Do you know what I mean?”
Now that Scream 6 is officially happening, Kristen might consider joining the cast if an opportunity presented itself to her. The Spencer star said she finds the series harder to watch as an adult, but appreciates its satire and as we know, is a big fan of Neve Campbell.

“I would read the script,” she explained. “I love Neve Campbell so much. She was very nice to me, and it was very satisfying that she’s a very nice person.”

“I love that movie. I’ve watched it recently, as an adult though. It’s so gnarly,” Kristen continued. “I love the movie because it loves movies. The coolest part of Scream is what it says about film. It’s so self-aware. It folds in on itself like six times. I love how much [Wes Craven] loves movies and how embedded that is.”

“It’s a total film nerd type of movie. It’s not just a flasher flick. It’s a beautiful movie,” she added, while noting that it can be “so hard to watch” regardless. “I’m like, ‘I don’t have the stomach for that shit anymore.’ I was like, ‘Oh, man, this is very, very, very intense.'”
