Profile of FARA Executive Director Dr Aggrey Agumya

Dr Aggrey Agumya is the Executive Director of the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA).

The Ugandan national is the third Executive Director and Head of Mission of FARA coming after immediate-past ED Yemi Akinbamijo and Monty P Jones.

He has gained over 25 years of experience in agricultural research and development.

Dr Agumya holds a doctorate degree in Geo-Information Sciences from the University of Melbourne, Australia. He also holds a master’s degree in Surveying and Photogrammetry from the same university.

He is a graduate of Makerere University, Uganda, where he holds a bachelor’s degree in Surveying and Land Information Systems.

Dr Agumya has worked in various capacities in the agricultural research and development sector, including as a researcher, project manager, and technical advisor.

He has worked with a number of international organizations, including the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

Dr Agumya is a specialist in spatial analysis and remote sensing. He has used these technologies to develop and implement a number of projects that have improved the productivity of African agriculture.

He is also a strong advocate for the use of science and technology to address the challenges of food insecurity and poverty in Africa.

Dr Agumya is a member of the African Academy of Sciences and the Uganda National Academy of Sciences. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Work at FARA

Dr. Aggrey Agumya has been with FARA for 17 years.

He started as a Programme Officer for the Sub-Saharan Africa Challenge Programme (SSA-CP), a FARA flagship program. He then held a number of leadership positions, including Technical Advisor to the two Executive Directors; Monty P Jones and Yemi Akinbamijo.

In 2020, he was appointed Director of Research and Innovation at the Secretariat, where he also served as the de facto Deputy Executive Director.

Among the list of Dr Agumya’s key achievements are:

  • Led the development of a national agricultural research strategy for Uganda.
  • Managed a $10 million project to improve the productivity of maize production in Uganda.
  • Developed a spatial analysis tool that has been used to map agricultural land use in Africa.
  • Published over 50 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr Agumya is a highly respected and experienced leader in the agricultural research and development sector.
