Charlotte Osei speaks amidst Chief Justice controversy

Charlotte Osei, former Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, has humorously reacted to the ongoing controversy involving the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo as reported by Ghana Web.

In a social media post on April 26, 2025, Osei jokingly remarked that, based on an old African belief, she would have “died from sneezing” over the past two weeks due to the frequent mentions of her name in public discussions.

Osei’s comment comes in the wake of President John Dramani Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo, following a prima facie case established against her in relation to three petitions.

The President’s action, carried out in consultation with the Council of State, led to the formation of a five-member committee to investigate the matter.

The move has drawn attention due to their similarity to Osei’s own experience, where petitions against her led to her removal from office.

Many social media users have drawn parallels between the two cases, with some labeling it a situation of “karma.”

Both Osei and Torkornoo faced petitions that were referred to the Council of State, resulting in the subsequent decisions made by the President.

Osei, who was appointed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, was removed from office during the administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
