SEND Ghana commends govt for uncapping GETFund and NHIL

SEND Ghana has expressed approval of the government’s decision to uncap the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) as part of the 2025 budget.

The good governance organisation believes this move will play a crucial role in ensuring sustainable financing for both the education and healthcare sectors, ultimately benefiting millions of Ghanaians.

In a statement addressing the budget presented by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on Tuesday, March 11, SEND Ghana highlighted the significance of the uncapping, particularly in the context of healthcare funding.

SEND Ghana stated that the uncapping of the NHIL is a major milestone in the country’s efforts to improve healthcare accessibility and affordability.

For years, healthcare financing in Ghana has faced significant challenges, including inadequate funds to support the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), delays in payments to healthcare providers, and limited access to essential medications and medical services.

“The government’s decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) and allocate GH¢9.93 billion to the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) in the budget is a major step toward sustainable healthcare financing.

“This action will not only improve access to quality healthcare for Ghanaians but also help the country move closer to achieving Universal Health Coverage. Additionally, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has been uncapped, allowing for more resources to address critical infrastructure deficits and enhance the quality of education at the SHS and tertiary levels.”
