Former Municipal Chief Executive of Asokore Mampong, Alidu Seidu, has condemned the recent wave of violence in Ghana, particularly a deadly clash between the Ghana Armed Forces and local youth in Obuasi. In an interview with Oyerepa TV, Seidu expressed concern over the growing violence, warning that it jeopardizes the country’s democratic stability. He criticized the current administration for contributing to an environment where such violence thrives, suggesting that many Ghanaians who once supported President John Dramani Mahama now regret their decision. According to Seidu, the NDC’s failure to mobilize voters led to their loss in the last election, and he believes that if elections were held today, the outcome would be different. He also emphasized that peace is paramount, adding that nothing is more important than maintaining order and stability in the country.
Seidu contrasted the actions of the ruling government with those of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that the NPP would never engage in violent tactics. His comments follow a violent incident in Obuasi, where illegal miners clashed with soldiers at an AngloGold Ashanti mining site. The confrontation resulted in the deaths of seven miners and left one injured. According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the miners attempted to breach security and were armed with locally made rifles and knives, opening fire on the soldiers, who responded in self-defense.
In response to the tragedy, President Mahama has called for an immediate investigation. A statement from his spokesperson expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and called for accountability in addressing the incident.
