Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has called for a more structured approach to youth development in Ghana, emphasizing the importance of integrating youth desks across all government institutions. Her parliamentary submission highlighted the need for technical skills training and a deeper understanding of youth attitudes and challenges. Speaking on the newly established Ministry of Youth Development, Dr. Rawlings stressed that “a holistic approach to youth development requires embedding youth-centered policies in every sector.” She underscored the significance of aligning government initiatives with the realities faced by young people, particularly in education and employment.
Her remarks came during a broader budget presentation that outlined key government allocations. The budget included provisions for education—such as the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program, textbooks, and school feeding—alongside funding for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), social protection initiatives like the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program, road infrastructure, and district assemblies. The government also reaffirmed its commitment to fiscal responsibility and fulfilling its promises.
Meanwhile, some members of the ruling party National Democratic Congress (NDC) have interpreted Dr. Rawlings’ submission as a direct challenge to the opposition party New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its leadership in Parliament. They believe her comments “disgraced Afenyo-Markin and NPP members,” viewing her critique as exposing weaknesses in the government’s approach to youth development.
The debate continues as policymakers deliberate on the best strategies to address Ghana’s youth-related challenges while ensuring sustainable development.
