TUC Rejects 10% Pay Raise, Insists on 30% Increase for Public Sector Workers

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the government’s recent announcement of a 10% wage increase for public sector workers. The union is instead demanding a 30% increase, citing the prevailing economic conditions and the rising cost of living.
According to Bernard Owusu, Chairman of the TUC, the decision to accept the 10% offer was conditional, pending further negotiations scheduled for April 2025. “Nobody is okay with the government’s offer. We accepted it with the understanding that we’ll renegotiate in April and potentially secure a better deal,” Owusu stated.
The TUC’s stance reflects growing discontent among public sector workers, who feel that the government’s approach to addressing their wages is inadequate. While the government justifies the 10% increase based on current economic conditions, workers’ unions argue that it’s insufficient to meet the financial challenges they face.
Owusu emphasized that the TUC believes the government could have offered more, but the increase was constrained by economic circumstances. Despite concerns, the TUC has accepted the 10% increase as a temporary measure, hoping for a better outcome in the upcoming April negotiations.
The union remains committed to advocating for fair wages for public sector workers, emphasizing that their fight for better compensation is ongoing.
