Some road contractors died due to NPP government’s inability to settle debts

Vice President of Ghana Progressive Road Contractors Association, Hammond Larbi Vice President of Ghana Progressive Road Contractors Association, Hammond Larbi

The Vice President of the Ghana Progressive Road Contractors Association, Hammond Larbi, has highlighted the devastating impact of delayed payments under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, alleging that some contractors lost their lives while waiting for their debts to be settled.

Speaking in an interview on Kasapa FM, monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, he revealed that over 500 road contractors were affected, with many unable to afford healthcare.

“I was fighting for my contractors; they were more than 500. The NPP government did not pay the debts they owed us, and it really affected my job. Thankfully, I didn’t lose my life.

“Some contractors lost their lives while waiting for the government to settle the debts. They were sick and didn’t have money to buy their medication,” he recounted.

Sharing his personal ordeal, Larbi explained how he struggled to raise funds for surgery.

He noted that the Association had even petitioned the former Minister of Roads, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, who initially asked them to submit hospital bills for assistance.

However, the former minister later advised the Association’s leadership to take out a bank loan with the promise of a government refund, a commitment that was never fulfilled.

“Had it not been for the generosity of a benefactor who stepped in to pay my bill, I don’t know what would have happened to me,” he added.
