Jubilation As Zanetor Rawlings Joins President Mahama’s Cabinet

In a notable political move, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as the new Deputy Minister of Health. The appointment has drawn significant attention, particularly given her prominent ties to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and her status as the daughter of the late President Jerry John Rawlings, the founder of the NDC.

According to Ghanaweb, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, a respected figure in Ghanaian politics and a three-term Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, has long been involved in national affairs. Her recent appointment follows a period of intense speculation, especially regarding her earlier exclusion from key government roles. Her absence had been a subject of discussion among political analysts, with many questioning why someone so closely linked to the NDC’s history had not previously been included in President Mahama’s cabinet.

Earlier in January, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about the exclusion of Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, along with Samuel Atta Mills, the brother of the late President John Evans Atta Mills. Afenyo-Markin suggested that their omission highlighted issues of fairness within the party, calling for the recognition of individuals with deep ties to the NDC’s foundational legacy.

The delay in Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings’ appointment had led to speculation, with some attributing it to internal party dynamics or political strategy. However, her appointment is widely seen as an effort by President Mahama to unite the NDC and reaffirm the party’s historical roots.

With her medical background and extensive experience in the legislature, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings is expected to bring valuable expertise to the Ministry of Health, particularly as Ghana continues to focus on improving healthcare infrastructure and recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Mahama’s decision is seen as a response to ongoing political pressures, seeking to balance various factions within the NDC. By appointing a figure with strong historical ties to the party, the administration aims to ensure party cohesion and continuity in governance. As Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings steps into her new role, all eyes will be on her contributions to the health sector and her performance in this crucial position.
