The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), Alex Mould, has clarified the government’s position on the future and efficiency of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

According to him, the government does not intend to privatize the company but rather seeks to encourage private sector participation in the distribution value chain.

His comments follow recent public concerns and confusion regarding the government’s decision to involve the private sector in the energy supply chain.

On February 21, 2025, Mould addressed the issue in a Facebook post, stating, “The NDC has no intention of privatizing ECG. The intention is to encourage private sector participation along the distribution value chain. Privatization involves the sale of equity and/or assets.”

He further clarified that, “ECG would still remain 100% state-owned.”

Similarly, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has dismissed claims that the government is planning to sell ECG.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Thursday, February 20, 2025 he explained that the government is merely seeking a partnership to improve revenue collection within the company.

“We have not said we are selling ECG. Let no one misquote me. We are only seeking partnership in the distribution sector, particularly in billing and collection activities.”

According to him, the move is aimed at addressing inefficiencies in ECG’s operations, particularly in revenue mobilisation.

John Jinapor cited a personal example to highlight ECG’s billing and collection challenges,

“I’m telling you the truth, in my house, for three months, they have not even collected the bills. This is one of the issues we are trying to resolve.”
